This acidity is essential because it creates an inhospitable environment for many harmful bacteria and pathogens. Maintaining proper vaginal pH balance reduces the risk of common conditions such as bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. 

When vaginal pH rises above the normal range, harmful bacteria can multiply more easily. That’s why healthcare professionals recommend that women who experience recurrent infections regularly check vaginal pH, especially if they notice changes in discharge, odor, or irritation. 

Several factors can temporarily affect vaginal pH, including menstruation (blood has a higher pH), semen exposure, antibiotics, and certain hygiene products. Monitoring vaginal pH can help women better understand their bodies and take early action when imbalances occur.

The Role of Lactobacillus in Vaginal Microbiota 

Lactobacillus vaginal species are the cornerstone of a healthy vaginal microbiota. These beneficial bacteria produce lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and other antimicrobial substances that help maintain an acidic vaginal pH. 

This acid production is critical for preserving lactobacillus vaginal health, as it suppresses the growth of potentially harmful microorganisms. The more dominant Lactobacillus is in the vaginal ecosystem, the more stable the vaginal pH balance tends to be. 

In addition to producing lactic acid, Lactobacillus bacteria compete with pathogens for nutrients and adhesion sites on the vaginal epithelium. This competitive action further strengthens the body’s natural defense system. 

When Lactobacillus levels decline, the vaginal environment becomes less acidic, increasing vulnerability to infections. Supporting lactobacillus vaginal health through appropriate hygiene, balanced nutrition, and medical guidance when necessary is essential for long-term well-being. 

Factors That Disrupt Vaginal Microbiota and pH Balance 

Many internal and external factors can disrupt the vaginal microbiota and alter vaginal pH balance. 

One of the most common causes is antibiotic use. While antibiotics are essential for treating bacterial infections, they can also reduce beneficial Lactobacillus populations, making it harder to maintain a healthy vaginal pH. 

Hormonal changes—such as those occurring during pregnancy, menopause, or while using hormonal contraceptives—can also impact the vaginal environment. Estrogen levels influence glycogen production in vaginal cells, which in turn supports Lactobacillus growth.
